Guide 2 Flashlights

Shining some light on a dim subject

The quintessential camping and emergency blackout light source, the flashlight has been illuminating shadows since the late 1890s. Of course, back then it really was a “flash” light; that is, it was so weak, users could only create a brief flash to light up their surroundings. But flashlight history is all in the past. They are now used by almost everyone in the developed world, though for vastly different reasons.

From a professional using a flashlight to help with demanding and precise work to outdoor enthusiasts using them for cord-free lighting, many keep a flashlight on hand in case of emergency. They’re also pretty good at finding treasures lurking beneath the refrigerator. Even kids can put them to use, making spooky faces that add to their scary tales or chasing night creatures through the backyard.

Flashlights are a Hot Commodity - Who Should You Trust?

Manufacturers of cheap flashlights may offer up exorbitant claims about lifespan and illumination, so it’s easy to get confused. The best way to avoid getting tricked is buying a flashlight with a reputable brand name, which will cost you a bit more money. So if cash is an issue, you just might have to take your chances. Though some companies sell good flashlights with a decent price tag, they’ll never come close to beating that dollar-store price.

Case in point: Some manufacturers have been found to be producing cheap shake flashlight knockoffs. Stick in a weak magnet and some moveable parts, add a few disposable coin cell batteries and voilà, you have a flashlight that leads people to believe they’ll never need batteries again. Of course, some companies help consumers come to that conclusion by actually promising it.

Who Needs a Flashlight?

Pretty much anyone will find that they need a flashlight at one time or another. Some need flashlights for work and some just for outdoor activities like hunting or fishing. Depending on the use, a flashlight has to meet very specific needs. There are also several types of flashlights which can overlap into other categories. Rechargeable, batteryless and combination flashlights are often used for various purposes including tactical use and diving.
